Tow-Behind Attachment Compatibility Checklist
Tow-Behind Attachment Compatibility Checklist
tractoriron.com
Take this checklist with you before buying a tow-behind cart, aerator, roller, sweeper, spreader, or drag harrow. The key rule: the attachment's load rating is not your tractor's towing limit. Verify both.
Tow vehicle
- My machine has a rear hitch, or I can add a bolt-on hitch kit
- I know my tractor or mower's stated towing weight limit: ______ lbs
- The attachment's loaded weight is within that towing limit
- I have (or can add) wheel weights or ballast for traction
- My tires have enough tread for pulling loads on my terrain
Attachment fit
- Hitch type matches (universal pin/clevis or specific)
- Working width suits my property and gates
- Attachment fits through gates and into storage: width ______ in
- Recommended operating speed matches how I will use it
- For aerators and harrows: a tray or weights to help it penetrate
Safety on my property
- I will take slopes straight up and down, not across
- I will slow down before turns and stops with a load
- I will not exceed the tow vehicle's rating on hills (loads push downhill)
- Loaded trailer or cart braking distance accounted for
- Children and bystanders kept clear during operation
