Loader Specs: What the Numbers Mean
Loader specifications determine which attachments you can run safely and how effectively you can use them. These are the figures to know before you shop for attachments.
Lift Capacity at Pivot Pins
Theoretical MaxThe maximum weight the loader can lift when the load is directly at the pivot pin connection, with the bucket curled all the way back, close to the tractor. This is always higher than real-world capacity and should not be used for attachment sizing.
Lift Capacity at 500mm (19.7 in) Forward

Find your loader's 500mm lift capacity
Look in your loader's spec sheet for the rated capacity at 500mm forward. This is the real-world number to use, not the pivot pin capacity, which is always higher.
Find the attachment's empty weight

Breakout force is listed in the loader specs and is separate from lift capacity, a loader with high lift capacity but low breakout force will struggle to fill the bucket in hard conditions.
Do I need a tooth bar on my bucket?
A tooth bar (bolt-on serrated steel bar added to the bottom cutting edge) dramatically improves performance in hard or compacted soils and gravel. It helps the bucket bite into material, fill more completely, and grip objects for carrying. The trade-off is that tooth bars leave scoring marks on smooth surfaces like asphalt or concrete. If you mostly work in dirt, gravel, or rough terrain, add a tooth bar. If you work primarily on finished surfaces, stick with a plain cutting edge.
How do quick-attach systems work?
A quick-attach coupler is a steel plate mounted on the front of your loader that locks onto a matching receiver on each attachment. To swap attachments, you position the loader against the attachment's receiver hooks, curl the coupler plate forward to engage the top hooks, then engage a hydraulic or mechanical pin to lock the bottom. The whole process takes 1–3 minutes without leaving the seat (on modern loaders with hydraulic connect). Different standards (SSQA, John Deere, Euro) have different hook and pin geometry, always confirm compatibility before purchasing attachments.
What is SSQA and is it universal?
SSQA stands for Skid Steer Quick Attach. It was originally developed for skid steers but has become the dominant aftermarket standard for tractor loader attachments. It's not truly universal (it's just the most common standard. Most aftermarket attachment manufacturers produce SSQA-compatible products. However, some major brands (John Deere, some Kubota loaders) use proprietary systems on certain models. Verify your loader's coupler type before purchasing any attachment) SSQA is identifiable by its flat plate with two top hooks and two lower holes for locking pins.
Can pallet forks damage my loader?
Pallet forks can damage your loader if you exceed the rated capacity or use them incorrectly. The primary risk is bending the loader boom or damaging the quick-attach mechanism by shock-loading it (for example, driving into a pallet at speed or dropping a heavy load. Always carry loads close to the ground, accelerate and stop smoothly, and verify the total weight (forks + load) doesn't exceed your loader's lift capacity. Note that lift capacity at 500mm forward is significantly less than the capacity at the pivot pins) use the 500mm rating for all loaded travel.
